Volunteer Assistant Ranger

We are looking for a volunteer assistant ranger for 3 months full time beginning late May.  This is a great opportunity to develop skills and experience in nature conservation and rangering. The role is based in the south of Mull and involves assisting with varied tasks over a number of island sites including Iona and Staffa.  Tasks will include wildlife survey work, delivery of education projects and public events programme, providing information to visitors, practical maintenance.  Accommodation and some travel costs will be covered.

 

You must show enthusiasm for wildlife and the great outdoors.  Some knowledge/experience in the relevant field would be useful but more important is flexibility, good communication skills, an ability to work under your own initiative, and a desire to learn.  You will need to be willing and able to work inside or outside in all weathers, including some lone working in rugged coastal terrain.  Some weekend/evening hours will be required.

The Mull and Iona Community Trust project, More MESS & Waste LESS has been awarded a grant of £55,428* from the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund. The project will provide education and practical demonstrations to show that waste materials are a valuable community asset that can provide environmental and economic benefits to the islands. The project will make savings in carbon emissions through diverting waste from landfill for reuse, upcycling and recycling.

*Includes maximum funding of £26,001 from the European Regional Development Fund.

Exciting Childcare News

As part of the Mull and Iona Community Trust’s commitment to establish the demand and need for more childcare provision, we are excited to be working with Argyll and Bute Council to offer extended childcare at Tobermory Pre 5 Unit during term time and school holidays. This is part of the Scottish Governments Early Learning and Childcare Trials which will test a variety of models for delivering 1140 hours free childcare.

We are currently in the process of registering our childcare service ‘Mini Muileachs’ and will shortly be recruiting, in time for the trials to start during the 2017 summer holidays, going through to June 2018. Although first priority will be given to those registered for pre 5 at Tobermory from August 2017, children registered at other pre 5 units on Mull, will be able to access additional hours at Tobermory.
